Why I’m Giving in to LEGO Sets… And Other Great Kid Gifts

I waved my white flag last weekend and succumbed to the requests of the smaller (and apparently WAY cooler) LEGO sets. One little boy and his dad decided it was time to graduate from LEGO DUPLO sets. Time for the big kid stuff y’all… and what better place to shop for LEGO sets other than Target this holiday season? 

These LEGO sets are no joke, y’all. They are so cool. I guess I’ve been so far removed from them for 25 years that I didn’t realize how meticulous and specific they were. We found LEGO Harry Potter Quidditch™ Match, LEGO Harry Potter The Knight Bus™ and then (perfect for the season) a LEGO City Ski Resort all at Target. 

My other reasons for getting the next step up in LEGO world: quality time, fine motor skills and needing something with more imagination. While building these LEGO sets with my son, I put my phone down and just played. We built for 3 hours on Sunday and the only interruption was a call from a family member. I haven’t played that long with him in quite some time. Not only did we play, but I got to see in action how his little brain works. Watching him try and succeed and to see those fine motor skills in action was worth all the time it took.

Lastly, the imagination. Four is a hard year because you are smack in the middle of toddler toys and cool toys. With the help of mom and dad and a whole lot of patience, these older LEGO sets ended up being perfect for us. It is a toy the whole family can help with, and those don’t come along often! We created story lines and changed the little minifigure heads and positions and I couldn’t have asked for a better afternoon under the Christmas tree. 

I picked out a few other family-friendly gifts ideas at Target for y’all. Going for the fun, basics this year – matching pajamas, LEGO Brick boxes (to organize and hold all the little LEGO sets), giant drawing pads and a giant box of colors, card games and board games. You can’t go wrong with a gift that the whole family can join in!
