Modern Farmhouse Roof Pitch
What makes a modern farmhouse modern? Well, it starts with the roof. The pitch or angle of the roof has to be straight, clean and the right angle. The true “modern farmhouse” design has all roofs the same pitch. Very similar to the historic, yet still popular, Scandinavian farmhouses. Now the big question…
What is the perfect modern farmhouse pitch?
We did some serious research here. Many days were spent reading online, driving around downtown Austin and scrolling Pinterest. We’ve landed on the “perfect” modern farmhouse roof pitch at 12:12. (Some people do 12/12, too. Whatever you prefer.) If a roof rises 12” in a length of 12”, this is 12/12 roof pitch. The 12:12 roof pitch correlates with the Scandinavian builds from the 1600s as it’s considered a steep slope to help with ample rain and snow. (We won’t be reaping the snow benefit in Texas but will help with the rainy season!)
What is the perfect angle of a modern farmhouse roof?
12/12 roof pitch angle = 45.00 degrees. Upon our research we found a great article on the entire Scandinavian farmhouse building process and the author determined that most are between the angle of 41-58. The smaller the angle the steeper the slope of the roof. Those slopes made the most sense for the environment they were in. We decided on a 45-degree angle because of the clean, exact and symmetrical look. A perfect square would occur if another roof was placed underneath.
Our modern farmhouse roofs will all be the 45-degree angle or 12/12 pitch. We are pretty adamant about everything being cohesive. Roof pitches that don’t match are one of our biggest building faux pas. What are your thoughts? What’s the perfect pitch??
Thank you for the great article. Modern Farmhouse style uses a gable roof in a steeper pitch than a typical home built in the last two or three decades. Perhaps it’s a popular feature because of its ability to create higher, more dramatic vaulted ceilings, in turn, opening up the interior spaces and making them feel larger. When steep gables aren’t being used, then a flat roof is often added to the mix.

Nice architectural roof. You have a perfect fitch angle. Good job!
Great stuff Erin! You have a very innovative way of looking through things. loved your idea about the 45-degree pitch however we at https://eastbourneroofers.co.uk , we do it the traditional way and even though your idea is quiet modern, our clients still prefer the old fashioned way!
